Thinking about moving abroad but frozen by fear?
You’re not alone — and you’re definitely not crazy. Here’s what we learned when we asked the same question over and over again:
“What if it all goes wrong?”
We get it. That fear nearly stopped us too.
Before we moved to Barbados under the Welcome Stamp, I spent countless nights in bed (or at the pub) spinning in circles.
What if we hated it?
What if working online doesn’t work?
What if the kids struggled with school?
What if it was all just a massive, expensive mistake?
Here’s what helped us move forward — and what might help you too.
1. You’re Not Burning It All Down — You’re Testing a New Life
We told our kids we were going for a year. Just one year. No pressure.
You can rent out your house, keep your job, set some backup plans. This doesn’t have to be “forever.” It’s just a bold trial.
2. You’ll Never Be Fully “Ready”
And that’s okay.
If we’d waited until we had all the answers — school plans, housing, income streams — we’d still be talking about it instead of living it.
Most people never take the leap because they wait for perfect timing. But progress starts when you stop waiting and start moving.
3. You Can Always Change Your Mind
This isn’t about proving anything.
If it doesn’t work out? You go back. You regroup.
But at least you tried. At least you don’t spend the next decade wondering.
How We Handled It
We made a loose plan. We talked to people who had done it. We saved up a little buffer. And we backed ourselves.
We kept coming back to this:
“Better to leap and learn than stay stuck and slowly burn out.”
Final Thoughts
Fear is normal.
But letting fear win is what keeps people stuck in lives they don’t want — for way too long.
So yeah — it could go wrong.
But it could also go so right.
Our life isn’t perfect. But it’s ours. And it’s a hell of a lot warmer, freer, and more us than it used to be.
